<image:title>Meet Your Acupuncturist - Ashley St. Amand, M. Ac. In 2017, I graduated from Simmons College in Boston, MA with my B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics. During my studies in nutrition I found my passion for holistic healing and felt a need to bring my scope of practice beyond a consultative nature to a more hands-on approach. Acupuncture had a major influence on my upbringing through my aunt and uncle who both practice acupuncture in Southern Maine, so I was familiar with the interactive essence of acupuncture and the immediate healing that it can bring. I elected to pursue this passion at the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) in Worcester, MA. Over 8 semesters of studies in less than 3 years, I earned my degree of Master of Acupuncture in Chinese Acupuncture Studies. That title encompasses studies in Traditional Chinese Medical theory, Anatomy and Physiology, Western Bio-Medicine, Orthopedic Acupuncture, Chinese Nutrition, Advanced Needling Techniques as well as adjunctive techniques like cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, and kiniseology taping. Along with my clinical rotations in NESA's Worcester Treatment Center, I also spent a clinical rotation in the Pediatric Pain Unit at Boston Medical Center treating a variety of pediatric cases. After apprenticing with Tom St. Amand (my uncle) for the past 3 years, I am joining him in his Kennebunk office as of August 2021. I am thrilled to have joined Family Acupuncture and look forward to working with each and every one of you! Visit my website https://www.acuashmaine.com/</image:title>

<image:caption>More than 2500 years ago healers observed that patients’ complaints were almost always linked to the environments they lived and worked in and the season’s gradual changes. An illness, they reasoned, was the result of an emotional or physical disharmony or imbalance within a patient that made him or her suceptible to attack. In this view a woman working in a cold field all day or a man sleeping in a hot, dry room each night were anticipated to show different signs and symptoms even if they complained of the same illness. Because of this understanding of the causes of illness acupuncture patients are asked many specific questions about the nature of their condition. For instance, is your headache or backache pain dull, stabbing, or empty? Does your insomnia mean trouble initially falling asleep or is the problem an inability to sleep the whole night? Is an ache or illness worse with changes in the weather? With this information an acupuncturist determines how an illness uniquely affects each patient and then tailors treatment to that person’s needs. Sterile, one-use needles are inserted at specific acupuncture points and manipulated according to a treatment plan that may call for warming or cooling a patient, building up energy to fight a disease, or soothing anxiety that causes panic attacks without warning. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the true indication of good health is adaptability; to the seasons, to the weather, to the physical and emotional bumps we all encounter on the road through life. Balance and harmony combine to assure us of adaptability and this, in turn, provides a much smoother ride.</image:caption>
